The Story Behind ZIATA Wines

ZIATA Wines is the personal label of Karen Cakebread, launched in 2008 after nearly two decades with Cakebread Cellars. The project focuses on smaller production wines with a direct approach to vineyard sourcing and blending.

The label’s name honors Karen’s mother, Mary Annunziata. The Mia Madre Red Blend, a flagship wine in the ZIATA portfolio, continues that tribute, taking its name from the Italian phrase “mia madre,” meaning “my mother.”

About Karen Cakebread

Karen spent 18 years with Cakebread Cellars, where her work focused on hospitality, wine education and international marketing. She later launched ZIATA as her own independent label, taking a more active role in vineyard sourcing and blending. Through ZIATA, she remains closely involved in each wine, guiding it from fruit selection through the final blend.

From Vine to Table

The ZIATA collection began with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, two wines that remain central to the lineup. It has since expanded to include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and the Mia Madre Red Blend. From the beginning, Karen has stayed closely involved in every step, from vine to table. That approach continues to shape the wines produced under ZIATA today.
